Obverse: DN VALENTINI-ANVS PF AVG, diademed bust to the right Reverse: RESTITVTOR REI PVBLICAE, SMNQ, emperor with labarum (Christian standard) and Victoria statuette in hands Emperor Valentinian I (Flavius Valentinianus), who reigned between 364-375 AD, was the last great emperor of the Western Roman Empire. His historical significance is substantial for several reasons: Valentinian I came to power in a period of political instability. After the death of Emperor Jovian, he was elected by the army and managed to restore order in the western part of the Empire, which was subject to constant barbaric attacks (Germans, Alans, Sarmatians). He founded a new imperial dynasty, known as the Valentinian dynasty, which included his son, Gratian, and his brother, Valens (who reigned in the eastern part of the empire). This dynasty led a good portion of the second half of the fourth century. Valentinian was a vigorous military emperor. He fortified the borders of the Rhine and Danube, building fortifications and reorganizing the defense. He repelled invasions from Germanic tribes (quazi, alamani etc.) and obtained a few important victories. Although he was a Christian, Valentinian I maintained a relatively tolerant policy towards paganism and other religious cults. He did not impose harsh measures against traditional Roman religion, unlike some of his successors.
