Ion Mihalache (1882-1963) was a teacher, politician and minister in several governments. He founded and ruled the Peasants' Party. He fought heroically in the war for the unification of the country, and was decorated with the order "Mihai Viteazul". After the success in the 1919 elections, his party and the Romanian National Party from Transylvania formed the government of Alexandru Vaida-Voievod, in which Ion Mihalache was Minister of Agriculture and Lands (16 December 1919 - 12 March 1920). In 1926, the Peasants' Party merges with the Romanian National Party (ruled by Iuliu Maniu, who becomes its president, and I. Mihalache vice-president), giving rise to the National Peasants' Party. He was arrested in 1947 and died in prison.
