Emperor Domitian, who reigned between the years 81 and 96 AD, was a complex and controversial leader, but played an essential role in strengthening imperial authority and in the administrative and military development of the Roman Empire. Although his authoritarian leadership style garnered him numerous critics, his rule represented a period of stability and prosperity for the empire. Domitian strengthened the central power of the emperor, underscoring the divine nature of the imperial function and reducing the influence of the Senate. Through these measures, he consolidated the autocratic system initiated by his predecessors, ensuring more efficient governance and stricter control over the provinces. He was a rigorous administrator, concerned with public morality, order, and efficiency, and his fiscal and judicial reforms had long-term effects on the structure of the Roman state. Economically, Domitian was a protector of agriculture, promoting policies intended to stimulate production and protect small landowners. He also invested significantly in public construction, erecting temples, palaces, and fortifications, among them the completion of Vespasian's Forum and the reconstruction of the Capitol. Militarily, Domitian defended the borders of the empire, strengthening the borders along the Rhine and Danube and conducting campaigns in Dacia and against the Germans. Although not all campaigns were fully successful, they showed his constant concern for the security of the empire. However, Domitian ruled in an atmosphere of political tension. Initially popular among the army and the people, he became increasingly repressive, establishing a regime based on fear and surveillance. This authoritarian attitude attracted enemies among the aristocracy and the Senate, and in 96 AD he was assassinated in an internal plot.
