Mircea the Elder, ruler of Wallachia between 1386 and 1418, is considered one of the most remarkable figures of the Romanian Middle Ages. His historical importance is given both by the longevity of his reign and by the political, military and administrative achievements that consolidated Wallachia and increased its international prestige. Under his leadership, Wallachia reached one of the largest territorial extents in history, comprising regions such as Dobrudja and parts of Banat and Transylvania. Through this expansion, Mircea the Elder managed to strengthen the country's position against neighbouring great powers, especially Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. On the military side, he was remarkable for his courage and ability to organize resistance against the Ottoman threat. The most known confrontation is the Battle of Rovine (1394 or 1395), where the army led by Mircea managed to stop the advance of the Ottoman troops led by Sultan Bayezid I. This victory strengthened the image of Wallachia as a bastion of Christianity in the face of Islamic expansion. Mircea the Elder was also a skilled diplomat, managing to maintain alliances with important states of the time, such as the Kingdom of Hungary and Poland, but also successfully negotiate treaties aimed at preserving the country's autonomy. Moreover, his reign was characterized by efficient administration and support of the Orthodox Church, by founding monasteries and strengthening ecclesiastical authority.
