The 123 Series was the best-selling model Mercedes-Benz and set new vehicle safety standards and was a pioneer of the Combis in this class as well as of turbo diesel in Mercedes-Benz cars. The W123 earned a reputation for being well-designed, well-built, durable and reliable. Many taxi companies chose W123 and for this reason they were seen everywhere in Germany. Reaching 500,000 or 1,000,000 km with only minor mechanical problems was common with W123s used as taxis. Once the W123 models reached the end of their lifespan, they were often shipped to Africa and third world countries, where they were highly valued for their ability to travel on rough roads without requiring frequent maintenance.
