ulei pe pânză lipita pe carton, 61 x 49 cm, signed and dated lower left, in black, "Tsion, 1927"

The artist's ethnographic searches will have the fountain as a leitmotif and will grant the human figure the title of archetype of tradition. Ion Theodorescu-Sion will frequently return to the Argeș area, especially around the '20s, where he will paint directly in the middle of nature. He becomes an active observer and transcribes both the landscape and the human figures that wander through the valleys and carry out their daily life leisurely. We are dealing with a decorative composition, whose points of interest revolve around nature and the human figure. From the same period date works such as "Manole's Fountain" (1923), "At the Source of the Cross" (1925) or "At the Fountain of Miracles" (1925). We find the artist's inclination towards mural painting in the way he approaches and unfolds his forms. With references to mythology and legend, through scenic artifices, the artist brings to the foreground the traditional costumes of the characters: shirts and fur jackets, waistcoats, headscarves and handkerchiefs, or the jars carried on arms or heads, or carefully placed near the protagonists. The energetically outlined silhouettes provide a special rhythm to the interaction between the characters. The artist focuses his attention around the panorama of an ideal setting, where man is in direct communion with nature. The geometry of the entire frame seems directly derived from traditions and subsequently embedded in the fabric of the canvas.
