One of the constants of Constantin Piliuță's work was the creation of portraits. In addition to portraits dedicated to important personalities of Romanian culture (Tudor Arghezi, Val Mugur, Constantin Stroescu), Piliuță also focused on his own representations over time. The portrait provided him with the necessary precepts to reveal his deep psychological intuition. He manages to capture through the outlining of peculiar grimaces or a body language deciphered by him from the gestures of his model in a specific brushwork. This work reveals a combination of two of the artist's much-loved themes. He is not concerned with naturalistic imitation, nor does he idealize the exuberant chromatics used by his predecessors. He explores the explosive potential of vegetation and subjects it to his predilection for balance and harmony. The androgynous pair, betraying the silhouettes of acrobats, are therefore surrounded by nature, even communicating with it, partially taking on its significance. If mobility and active stance characterize the couple and provide the suitable framework for a dance of brush strokes, the vegetal element is at the opposite pole; yet it manages to communicate with the central element of the work through the insertion of color, which we find in the left hand of the male subject. The artist elaborates a luminous crescendo through the careful ratio of dark nuances to the evocative white that articulates the work. Through accent colors, he synthesizes impressions and movement, but keeps the face anonymous, letting the viewer's imagination decipher who the characters are, thus the artist achieves a striking juxtaposition between the affective and intellectual planes.
