Kimon Loghi is one of the most significant representatives of the Symbolist movement in Romania. Following his solo exhibition organized in 1904, during which he presented over 120 works, the artist received high praise and was compared to artists such as Franz Stück or Gustav Klimt. His favorite subjects included universal legends or Romanian folk tales; his life partner Hermina who also served as his muse, and the places he wandered: Balchik, Italy, Greece, Bran, France. It is said that the genesis of the Artistic Youth can be identified in the endless discussions held by Romanian artists in Kimon Loghi's workshop in Paris. In addition to the exhibition activity within this association, the painter also held the function of president of the association between 1920-1947. This work participated in the Artistic Youth exhibition in 1908 and is also reproduced in the catalog dedicated to the exhibition. Here we find Kimon Loghi in the role of storyteller with a brush of unique spaces. His exhaustive searches will reflect in pictorial motifs that have their genesis in his journeys. We notice the nature that surrounds the Greek city, the fortress, and the history-laden buildings. It is a large-scale work, built vertically, where rocks and architectural remnants find meeting points with the sea and the sky. The dark tones of the water and the pastel colors of the sky, the vegetation inserts among buildings, or a few trees sprout here and there and give the city its indispensable breath.
