Turning to his own family for inspiration, Nicolae Vermont assigned his daughter and wife the role of muses in his work. Little Zoe Vermont was born in 1911 and became a central subject of her father's paintings. Sketched sparingly in pencil; or studied closely in oil, Zoe Vermont will frequently appear in postures of maximum concentration, melancholy or reverie. The paternal love and care will therefore manifest in Nicolae Vermont's swapping of pen and brushes towards elevating the face of his daughter to the level of a leitmotiv. Zoe Vermont will inherit the plastic ambition of her father and will become an artist herself. She will particularly express herself in graphics and drawing and will engage in depicting landscapes and portraits. She will be present on the easels of artistic events at the Official Salon in the middle of the last century, thus appearing in front of the audience also as a creator, not just as a model. We will often find the artist's two muses depicted together - mother and daughter - sitting on the veranda, engrossed in reading or caught during household chores. This time, however, Zoe Vermont becomes the central character of a portrait dominated by earthy tones. We now have in front of us the daughter who has reached maturity, with well-defined features, confident attitude and sharp gaze. The model subtly integrates into the background, demonstrating the artistic skills of her parent and at the same time his ability to record in just a few strokes the entire psychology of his character.
