Nicholas Sanson (1600–1667), often nicknamed "the father of French cartography", transformed geography from a decorative art into a scientific discipline, emphasizing accuracy, measurements, and reliable sources. Throughout his career, he created over 300 maps, renowned for their airy style and for the thorough research that underpinned them. His detailed maps of Europe, the Americas, and the whole world had a major influence, contributing to shaping geographical knowledge in the 17th century. Sanson's work laid the foundation for subsequent generations of cartographers and established France as a first-rate center for cartographic innovation. Sanson was the main person responsible for moving the center of production and cartographic excellence from Amsterdam to Paris in the late seventeenth century.
