Contrary to expectations and even to the papers and albums dedicated to Tonitza, still lifes and flowers appear in the painter's creation as early as in the first years of individual exhibitions. The rarity of reproductions and even their presence in public collections can justify our considering still lifes with flowers as a rare or a very rare subject in Tonitza's art. But the research of Tonitza catalogues and exhibitions, starting with his first personal manifestations (1919-1920) reveals that works capturing these subjects were often incorporated in his creation. For instance, at the N.N. Tonitza - Ștefan Dimitrescu common exhibition in January-February 1920, Tonitza exhibited 90 works, 10 of which were paintings of flowers, and he was particularly attracted by wildflower bouquets, hesitating to paint the famous typologies of Luchian - roses or poppies. Flowers would represent an essential element in Tonitza's compositions throughout the 1920s, and even though they did not define a painting, they outlined the category of stylistic elements. The decorative elements used by Tonitza are taken directly from the flora, and when he actually chooses flowers as a subject, he experiments with the appearance thereof. Always seeming to come out of the frame, with virtually non-existent pitchers, Tonitza's bouquets are defined by a bright chromatic, always against a dark, contrasting background.
