The Expressionist tendency is established in Ţuculescu's work from his second individiual exhibition in 1939, at the Romanian Athenaeum, but in the following years it underwent oscillations, the paintings presented in the 1941 exhibition displaying a more moderate position. In some of them, critics noted influences of Andreescu, alternating with works of strange chromatic intensities and dramatic themes. The option for Expressionism is emphasised in the 1942 exhibition, when the works showed violent chromatic contrasts, unleashed touches and simplified compositional structures. The "black" period, as it manifested in the individual exhibition of Ţuculescu in 1942, included the lessons learned from the profound contact with the painting of Van Gogh, then with that of his contemporary Petraşcu. Ţuculescu's non-conformity, as it was defined at the beginning of the fifth decade of last century, showed an emotional unleashing before subjects that were still "banal", his landscapes and still lifes still reminding of the art of the Flemish master or of his fellow countryman. The major support of the works painted during this period, however, lied in the novel dynamics between the barely-there drawing and the chromatic palette, consisting of that intense, emotional Expressionism.
