The portrait activity of the painter Nicolae Vermont manifested since his youth, when he showed extraordinary qualities in understanding human figures. Focusing on emphasising social features - daily activities, occupations of the portrayed people - Nicholas Vermont suggested at the same time, on their face, the soul features that a certain type of activity imparts to an individual. At the border between portraiture and genre painting, two pictorial genres that originally intertwine in Vermont, his paintings depicting men bring to the forefront characters such as gypsies, chimney sweeps, peasant women, bagpipe players. In depicting them, Vermont is not concerned with the description of instruments related to the character’s occupation, he neglects portrait features and prefers to blend the characterisation of the characters through the objects of their work with the psychological characterisation, thus succeeding in creating works of great value. In this respect, we can also talk about the painting "Peasant Woman Sewing", painted in 1929. Following the typology of the "Chimney Sweep" masterpiece (1900), Vermont captures the young peasant from the right profile, during the sewing activity, in front of the table on which the lie the necessary items. The relaxed position, her head slightly bent to the left, the planes of her face, built in such a way as to suggest the woman's dedication, gentleness and delicacy, make this late representation a work of extraordinary human expressivity. The linen of her shirt, the fine fabric of her headscarf, give the painter many possibilities for expression.
