Cel mai probabil opera a participat la expoziția personală Ștefan Popescu, Galerie Bernheim Jeune et fils, Paris, 16-31 ianuarie 1904. În catalogul expoziției, la categoriile 2 și 10 se regăsesc operele "Fumée de goémons". Ștefan Popescu, ajuns în 1900 la Paris, intra repede în cercurile artistice, fiind introdus de Ioan Cantacuzino. Avea să se apropie de cercul de artiști și scriitori români care va sta la baza societății Tinerimea Artistică, însă adevărata revelație o va avea în Bretania, unde îl cunoaște pe Lucien Simon, membru ilustru al grupării Bande noire.
