Konstantin Shtarkelov is one of the prominent Bulgarian painters of the 20th century. In 1915, he began his studies at the National Academy of Arts under Prof. Ivan Mrkvička, and in 1919 he was among the founders of the society ‘Rodno Izkustvo’ (‘Native Art’) and participated in all its exhibitions. During his lifetime and to this day, he remains recognizable for his watercolor landscapes and still lifes. Shtarkelov captured almost every corner of Bulgaria – from the Black Sea and the Danube to the Sub-Balkan plains, Vitosha, and the Lozen Mountains – while most vividly celebrating the mountains: the beauty of Rila, Pirin, and the Rhodope Mountains, and the grandeur of the high peaks. The watercolor By the River presents Shtarkelov as a true native landscapist, who, through the world of nature, expresses his relationship to life and the beauty around him. (K.S.)
