The pictorial genius approached by Ștefan Câlția adheres to the realistic-fantastic area. The artist takes over the image storyteller role and assigns his painting a narrative function. The inclination towards values, traditions and divinity transforms his works into real pictorial poems. He narrates using signs, lines and shapes, creating an actual literature of ink on paper. The grammar that the artist uses is strictly linked to plastic signs. Sometimes he paints in black and white, emphasizing ink and charcoal. His work is thorough, as he establishes a very clear geometry. In Câlția's work, even figurative painting can be deconstructed into several elements. He takes over fragments from other people's stories, transposing them into reasons for image and colour. The painter of silences, the artist particularly stakes on multi-character compositions, on spatiality and the distances that are installed between them. In the economy of his creation, the character is offered an essential role. But for Câlția, the character must not be interpreted only through the decoding of a human silhouette, but can represent a cloud, a tree, a bird or even the background of the work. The artist presents the background as a perpetuum mobile and an infinite ancestral space on which he fixes a protagonist (regardless of his origin) and builds the rest of the composition around these two elements. In this work, the central motif is the pear tree in bloom. Also found in his other creations in considerably smaller sizes, this tree can take on the status of a motif. The pointillist blossoms and the trunk firmly rooted in the fertile soil transcend from the telluric to the celestial plane. Stefan Câlția's tree is distinguished and imposing by the majesty of its crown and its intense colouring, and thus comes to enjoy the foreground of the canvas.
