Description
Authentic samurai Kabuto and Mempo, most likely crafted in the second half of the 17th century, contain the distinctive elements of the most impressive piece of feudal Japanese armor. The lot includes the helmet worn by the samurai in battle, called Kabuto, as well as the fearsome mask, Mempo. These two pieces are part of the same armor, as both the iron and the fastenings are made from the same materials. The Kabuto is of the Hineno-jikoro type and features a distinctive Tenkokuzan hachi made from multiple hagi-no-ita plates, with a turquoise-colored tehen kanamono at the top. Additionally, the Kabuto is accompanied by a shikoro (the back part of the helmet, designed to protect the samurai's neck), made from several overlapping iron plates. The menpō-type Mempo covers the face from the nose to the chin and is decorated with a traditional-style mustache made from horsehair. The Mempo also features all the distinctive elements: Odome (the mount used to attach the Mempo to the Kabuto), Ase nagashi no ana (a hole located under the chin to facilitate the drainage of facial sweat), and Yodare
