PROVENANCE

The collection of the banker Max Schapira's family (? - 1921), philanthropist, patron, founder of the Romanian oil industry; Max Schapira was one of the most important businessmen in Ploiești during the 1890s-1920s, founding the Central Bank of Ploiești, the Astra Refinery, and serving as vice-president and administrator of the "Creditul Petrolifer" Society. In the 1950s, the collection belonged to pianist Ghitta (Gita) Mendel Shapira, Max Schapira's daughter-in-law. Gita Schapira, a concert pianist during the interwar period, was among other things, a sonata partner of George Enescu between 1930 and 1945; the collection of painter Gh. Vânătoru (1908-1983); private collection.

Stefan Luchian's flowers are undoubtedly one of those "products" of Romanian visual culture that have permeated the collective consciousness, with his emergence and rooting in the artistic imagination occurring almost simultaneously. Although the most important and consistent part of Luchian's work is condensed over a decade and a half (1898-1912), his cycles and major masterpieces easily stand out during this period, without the works themselves being analyzed in a generic way. An excellent example of this is found in the special category of watercolors, which places Luchian in an unusual register; his creation is capable of producing not only significant oil paintings but also works in minor techniques (watercolor, pastel, drawing) that ultimately define his style. A detailed analysis of the periods and cycles created by the artist during those years, focusing on watercolor painting, reveals that the first compositions with flowers appeared around 1900, when Luchian was influenced by the art of 1900 and Art Nouveau. Allegorical, highly decorative compositions featuring female figures and floral panels emerged then, at which point the artist also created his first standalone still lifes with bouquets of flowers, both in oil and watercolor. The use of watercolors allowed for very rapid execution, based solely on a preliminary, sketched drawing
