Gheorghe Iliescu Călinești was initiated into the mysteries of sculpture by his father, who carved iconostases in wood. He perfected his professional education at the Academy of Fine Arts, under the guidance of Maestro Corneliu Medrea. His first personal exhibition, organised in 1966 at Sala Dalles, was also the one that ensured his rise to fame. At that moment, the Plastic Artists Union rewarded his effort with the highest award. Iliescu Călinești took part in numerous international exhibitions, of which we mention: the Venice Biennale, the Paris Youth Biennale or the Budapest Biennale. In his work, we can find common characteristics with the one of sculptor George Apostu. Just like his colleague, Iliescu Călinești draws his inspiration from the creation of Constantin Brâncuși, yet he is far from becoming imitative. He shows a preference for mythological motifs, as well as those of a popular nature, and he prefers working in wood or stone. Gheorghe Iliescu Călinești got noticed as an avant-garde sculptor, who practised an abstract art of a geometrical nature. His sculpture has vigour, it is carved on large surfaces, and the ideas that the artist immortalises and encodes occupy the foreground in the organisation of his creation, to the shape's disadvantage.
