PROVENANCE

colecția Jean-Philippe Guilbert

The prolific interpretation of great artists which Horia Damian accomplishes in his youth (Rembrandt, Velasquez, Delacroix) converge towards the thorough study which the artist dedicates to the works from the second part of his creation, in France. In Paris, the artist takes over some Mondrian's interests for geometrical themes and transposes them into his works. He creates true masterpieces of monumental art and, throughout his artistic career, he perfects both his pictorial and sculptural manner. In the series he dedicates to columns, Damian cancels the primordial role of the main subject, offering innovative rhythms to the matter on his canvases. The experiment becomes a lifestyle and appears as a leitmotif of the entire post-1946 work. Starting from his belief according to which "Art starts with the extraordinary idea that we will never die, and this is precisely why it adds passion to life", we find the key towards decoding his entire work and we acquire new ways of interpreting his abstract research.
