Franz Christoph von Khevenhüller (1588-1650) was an Austrian historian and diplomat of noble origin, appointed by Emperor Ferdinand II of Habsburg as his ambassador in Spain. His family had long served the empire, and its men held important diplomatic and military positions. This work represents his main historical opus and was published posthumously between 1721 and 1726 in 12 volumes, the current presentation bound in 9 books. The author followed the reign of Emperor Ferdinand II of Habsburg, which he describes in detail based on his research in the imperial archives and state diplomatic correspondence he had access to due to his influential position. The work is also a laudation to the emperor, his protector. Within this history, the contribution of the Wallachian ruler Mihai Viteazul in the anti-Ottoman campaigns organized by the Holy League and the Habsburg Empire between 1593 and 1606 is extensively depicted, on the basis of many documents of the time. In this context, the Wallachian ruler is presented as a courageous military commander, experienced, charismatic, but at the same time very ambitious and dangerous to the long-term interests of the Habsburg Empire in this part of Europe. The copies include a printed period ex-libris, affixed to the reverse of the front cover. The book covers are cardboard clad in calf skin. The overall state of preservation is good.
