Research information

Published in the catalogue "Constantin Brâncuși. The Man and the Things", Erwin Kessler, Doina Lemny, Veillant Publishing, Bucharest, 2016 at pages 86-87. The letters were part of the exhibition "Brâncuși. The Man and the Things", at the Arcub-Gabroveni Cultural Center, Bucharest, June 23 - September 11, 2016.

Saint Lazare Station, Paris, 23.12.1936. Sender: [unmentioned]. Stamp: The Plaza, Dec 31 11:11 AM 36, Clerk 16th Floor. Letter signed by Morice and undated, without recipient. Written in black ink, front and back on a vellum sheet with the dimensions of 24.5 x 17 cm, torn from a larger sheet and unfolded. The letter is marked on the front, in the center, at the top, with II. "II I feel good and I would consider myself happy if it weren't for some obstacles that come from the outside. At this moment, I'm cleaning up in the workshop: when you come, you will find everything white as snow, even on the floor. Besides that, I am bothered by the fact that the Romanians are offering me a hall in the exhibition pavilion of '37, but the hall is half of what I would need and I do not want to do things halfway. Send me news about you as soon as possible, darling. I embrace you again and much love. Morice" Brâncuși probably mentions the Universal Exhibition in Paris from 1937 where Romania participated with its own pavilion, the Romanian commissioner being Dimitrie Gusti. Florence Meyer Homolka (1911-1962) was an American dancer known also for her passion for artistic photography, encouraged by Man Ray who introduced her to the avant-garde circles. She met Brâncuși in her youth when she was in Paris to study dance.
