The central part of the obverse depicts the building of the Athenaeum, viewed from the front, surrounded by its name and the years of construction, written in Latin numerals, 1886 - 1889, while the reverse includes a drawing of the building and the inscription " Devoted to Science / Letters and Art". Built on land that originally belonged to the Văcărești family, the Romanian Athenaeum became an important symbol of Bucharest, a capital city that was already in the process of modernization.
