Originally created by Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1864 under the name of the "Order of the Union", the Star of Romania will acquire its name and predominantly unaltered form during the reign of Carol I, who establishes the order on May 10, 1877. The first pattern on this decoration had a blue enamel double cross surrounded by rays, with the eagle as a symbol of the Romanian state next to the phrase "In fide salus" or "In Faith lies salvation" and an enamelled laurel wreath in the centre, on the obverse, while the reverse depicts the cypher of King Carol I, surrounded by the same green enamelled wreath on a red enamel background.
