Engraver, editor and typograph Claude du Bosc (ca. 1682-ca. 1746), French by origin, but settled in London and active in the English cultural space, was and art and military history enthusiast. He executed several engravings capturing battle scenes or war and fortification plans, inspired by the battlefield actions of some distinguished commanders of his era. In this respect, the most remarkable figures are those of the Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), one of the organisers of the military campaigns against France during the reign of King Louis XIV, as well as Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), commander of the Habsburg armies during the wars against the Ottoman Empire. The current piece was executed after the 1716 victory of the Austrian troops led by Eugene of Savoy against the Ottoman troops defending the Timișoara citadel, as an episode of the Austro-Turkish war between 1716 and 1718. The image illustrates the fortifications Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting.
