The medal was minted to mark the unveiling in Craiova of the eponymous monument, a spectacular creation by the French sculptor Jean-Jules-Antoine Lecomte du Nouÿ, who also made the medal. The components of the monument were cast in bronze in the workshops of Ferdinand Barbedienne in Paris between 1907-1912, and sent to Romania. The ensemble was inaugurated in 1912.
