The future general Vouillemin was attached to the French military mission in Romania, led by General Henri Mathias Berthelot, during the First World War. He played a major role in equipping the Romanian artillery with modern weaponry and coordinated the reorganization of this military branch at the beginning of the 1917 campaign. The poet Ion Pillat, mobilized as a reserve officer in 1916, was appointed liaison officer alongside the French military mission and aide-de-camp to General Vouillemin. In a sign of appreciation, the general offered him his photograph with a handwritten dedication. The photograph's cardboard is damaged.
