"By the mercy of God, I, Gabriel Movila, Voivode and ruler of the entire land of Wallachia, son of the great and very good departed Io. Simeon Movila Voivode. I give this command of my lordship to Prepusei and his sons, as many as God gives them, to be the village Pomărălul in Mehedinți county, with all borderlines, all incomes from everywhere, as much as they will choose from border to border. Because the above-mentioned village was an inheritance of the nobleman Lupul Paharnicul. Then, during my reign, Anca and Samfira, Lupul Paharnic's daughters, they gave and graced their father's servants, namely Prepusei and Calotă, with this above-mentioned village of Pomărălul for the many services they gave to their father, especially for bringing their father Lupul Paharnic from Vad, from Dârstor, from the bridge, from Ciocăneștii village where he was killed by Schinder-Pașa, and they buried him at the holy Tismana Monastery. For this reason, the above-mentioned ladies sought to grace Prepusei and Calotă with the above-mentioned village of Pomărălul, for the soul of Lupul Paharnic, for his eternal remembrance.
I saw the book of these ladies, done with a great curse and many boyars witnessing, namely: Răducanul Postelnic and noblewoman Brândușa and Manole and Pătru Armașul and the abbot Nifon and Preda Vătaful and Stoica Postelnic and Mateiu and Frățilă and Burțun and Grecul and Stan and Dumitru Postelnic, Pavel. Noblewoman Anca and Samfira put a curse on any of their relatives who would want to infringe on and destroy this alms and grace they gave for their father Lupul Paharnic, they will be cursed by the 318 (holy) parents, who are from Niceea and they will have part with Judas and Arie. Because Calotă made a deal with Prepusea, they of their own free will gave back Prepusea to Calotă 8000 aspri and an ox on his part from Ponărăl, as written above, and Prepusea bought from Calotă, as it is written above.
Calotă sold half its part of the village of his own free will and with everyone's knowledge and in front of my reign. And at their deal many good men testified, namely: Aldea Postelnic and Mihars Postelnic and Andronie from Albeni and Malcoci(?) the servant and Preda Vătaful from Ceplea and from Filiași Dumitru and Barbul from Poiana. Therefore, I gave Prepusei to be the village Ponărălul inheritance and his descendants, undisturbed by anyone by my command. I testify: Jupan Enache vel Ban of Craiova and Jupan vel dvornic and jupan Papa vel Logofăt and Meca the treasury and Miho Spatar and Mihalachi Stolnic and Grigorie comis and Vladul Paharnic and nobleman ____ Postelnic and ispravnic Papa vel logofăt. And I Lepadat Logofăt wrote in the seat of the fortress Târgoviște, January 22, and since Adam, the years passed up to now are 7127(?).
Io Gabriel Movila Voivode by the mercy of God.
Io Gabriel Movila Voivode."
This document is drafted on parchment by Lepădat logofăt and issued at the princely residence in Târgoviște by Voivode Gavril Movila (1618-1620) on January 22, 1619 (7127), in the Slavonic language, which was the cultural language and language of the princely chancelleries in the Middle Ages. The text of this chrysobull confirms the donation made by Anca and Serafina to Precisa and Calotă, servants of their father, Lupu Paharnicul. The donation consisted of the village Ponărăl in Mehedinți county and was offered as a reward for the return of the lifeless body of the Paharnic, killed in the battle of Ciocănești, and buried at the Tismana monastery. The document mentions the agreement made between Precisa and Calotă, the latter receiving 8000 aspri and an ox for the cession of his part of the village to Precisa. The document has irregular edges and shows traces of later reconditioning. At the bottom of the sheet, there is a note in Romanian, referring to an event that took place on December 20, 1785, when this chrysobull was saved from Cladova, held by the Ottomans, at great expense, by noblewoman Ana.
The chrysobull is written in black and red ink, beautifully decorated with vegetal and geometric motifs, in an archaic calligraphy. Its state of conservation is medium due to the passing of time and improper storage in the past.
Voivode Gavril Movila ruled Wallachia between 1618 and 1620. He came from the powerful family of Moldovan boyars, Movila, a family that provided many rulers and scholars, among whom the most famous are Jeremiah and Simion, Gabriel's father. The Movile family came into conflict with Michael the Brave, after whose death was followed on the Wallachian throne by Simion Movila, named Voivode with Polish help. The Wallachian boyars did not accept a Voivode of Moldovan origin at their head and managed to remove Gabriel from the throne after a short reign.
