Obverse legend: +MO[...]DAVIE Obverse description: Central ox head with five-rayed star between the horns, five-petal rosette on the left and crescent moon on the right. Reverse legend: +ST[...]A[...]OIEVODA Reverse description: Central split shield, featuring in the first quarter a cross with equal, flared and split at the tips arms, placed above a rosette, and in the second quarter three bands. Catalog reference: Romanian Coins and Banknotes (MBR), no. 604. The groschen coins issued by Stefan cel Mare are relatively rare, such emissions being known from a few isolated discoveries located especially in the Moldavian area. Compared to the type II groschen, the type I groschen are much rarer, suggesting that they were issued in smaller quantities and for a much shorter period. The artistic quality is superior, the coin being minted with punches made by experienced engravers accustomed with the international gothic style, refining in the Moldovan numismatic art the gothic duct of the legend letters.
