Antim Ivireanul, born in 1650, has Georgian origins, but his path within Orthodoxy brought him to the mouths of the Danube, in Țara Românească. Prior to this period, he lived near the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople, where he revealed the mysteries of faith, but also those of the typographic craft in all its details, from writing to paper making and xiloengraphy. Deeply invested in the erudite and cultivated atmosphere and environment supported by the Orthodox Patriarchate, he learned several languages, Greek, Turkish and Arabic. The one who brought him north of the Danube was the ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu, who entrusted him with the development and management of the royal typography in Bucharest in 1691. Particularly active and dedicated to books and the church, he held several ecclesiastical titles, the highlight of those being that of Metropolitan of Țara Românească, which he received in 1708. Using the authority he had and the funds he had access to, he developed the typography network in the country, with one in Râmnicu Valcea and one in Târgoviște. By means of the numerous church works he edited and cared for, Antim Ivireanul created the church language in Romanian and put into circulation the fundamental works of the Orthodox faith, translated into a Romanian version. Exiled from the country as a result of his opposition to the Fanariot regime, he was assassinated on his way to Constantinople, under circumstances still not fully elucidated. He was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992. The copy is complete and is in a very good state of preservation; it is part of the first edition, in 4º, with two unnumbered and 209 numbered pages. The first unnumbered page represents the title page and, on the back, has the coat of arms of Constantin Brâncoveanu and verses dedicated to the coat of arms; the second page is unnumbered and is comprised of a dedication for the ruler, drawn up by Antim Ivireanul. The book is printed in black, the characters of the letters, the layout of the page, the borders and the decoration elements are reminiscent of the Bible from 1688. The volume has 34 lines per page, initials, frontispiece, finals, typographic composition, they are also found in the typography decor of the Bible of Șerban Cantacuzino. The book's bind dates back to the first half of the 19th century; the covers are made of quality leather on wooden boards, in cold-iron printed decor, with a metal lock. On cover 1, you can find: linear borders, a central medallion, and in the corners you can see the four evangelists. Cover 2 features simple linear borders. The book’s preservation status is very good; both the bind and the block of the book are very well preserved; at the bookend, you can see some traces of glue at the binding of the pages; the paper retains a beautiful white colour.
