Jacobi (Jakob) Gronovius (1645-1716) was a Dutch scholar best known for his monumental work, published in 13 volumes in folio, The Treasury of Ancient Greece. The son of a well-known botanist, Jacob lived in a scholarly atmosphere and his passion for the historical writings of classical Greek-Roman antiquity encouraged him to publish editions of these authors. The copy is the seventh volume of the mentioned series, which includes the account of Alexander the Great's expedition to India as told by Flavius Arrianus and rediscovered by Gronovius. On the back of the title page is a large engraving of the Dutch scholar's portrait. The binding is vintage, with covers made of leather-covered cardboard, with the spine divided into seven cartouche designs. Very important is also the ex-libris in purple ink on the title page in the upper left corner which belonged to Colonel Dimitrie A. Pappasoglu (1811-1892), himself passionate about history, author of a History of Bucharest and passionate collector of numismatics.
