Engineer Henri Coandă (1888-1972), member of the Romanian Academy, was the son of General Constantin Coandă, one of the commanders of the Romanian army in the First World War, and his mother was of French origin. A passionate researcher of flight and inventor of several original flying machines, Coandă enjoyed the esteem of the engineer Gustav Eiffel (1832-1923) who encouraged and supported him in his youth, especially when he built the first Coandă-1910 flying machine. The handwritten dedication of the designer and builder of the famous Parisian tower offered his work to his younger Romanian confrere at the time when the latter was technical director of the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
