The painter Theodor Aman (1831-1891) became the artist of the Royal House of Romania following his appointment to this dignity by the future King Carol I. In this quality, he created a series of portraits of the sovereigns, both oil paintings and etchings which he printed in his own studio. This piece, a copper plate engraving, shows Carol bust in profile, in full dress uniform, with decorations. The work is signed and dated on the plate. The sheet of paper on which the work was printed is intact, it has not been cut after printing.
