watercolour and pen and ink on paper, 75 x 100.5 cm, 75 × 100,5 cm, signed bottom right, with pen and ink, "Ș. Luchian, Constantin Artachino, N. Grimani"

This project for the painting of the Amzei Church, an unfinished project for the three painters who signed it, is an unique document presenting Ștefan Luchian's short career as a church painter. The three churches painted by Luchian, together with his friend and mate Constantin Artachino, were all completed between 1897 and 1900, a period of financial distress for both artists. From 1898 to 1899 the two and Constantin Pascali would paint the Cathedral of St. Alexander in Alexandria - their best known project, in 1897 the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Tulcea and in 1900 the Brezoianu Church in Bucharest. The paintings in Tulcea and Bucharest no longer exist nowadays, the former a project not finished by the two artists, and later repainted by D. Marinescu; the current Brezoianu Church was rebuilt after 1944, and later demolished during the communist era. The draft of the present project, designed for the decoration of the nave and dome of the Amzei Church with paintings, is countersigned by the architect Alexandru Săvulescu, who at that time was also president of the Society of Romanian Architects and architect in the Ministry of Public Instruction and Religious Cults. The Amzei Church was completely rebuilt between 1898 and 1901, based on Săvulescu's plans, but the final painting was to be done by Umberto Marchetti, the three painters Artachino-Luchian-Grimani not having won the proposed project.
