The specific traits of Gheorghe Petrașcu's painting leads us towards the psychology of an artist who moulded himself after the structure of great Impressionists, although he was quick to detach himself, at the beginning of his career, from the presumed "habits" of plein-air painters. As his biography and landscape dates testify, Petrașcu painted in Venice between 1902 and 1939, when he seems to have made around 10 journeys. Amongst his most important itineraries, one can find those that materialised in 1924, 1928 and 1934, years in which the painter persevered and accomplished a series of representative works. The architecture, although simpler than that of Venetian palaces, keeps some elegant lines, and, apart from the obsolete feeling, the colours of the walls also bring a note of luxury, as Petraşcu turns the ancient painting into a precious patina. Depicted in multiple shades, water becomes consistent, like a mineral mirror, as the sky also seems to be made of an enamelled matter. The painting is dominated by an atmosphere of silence and meditation, evoking the calm and stable aspects of reality and the silence of the mineral matter making up Petraşcu's world.
