Max Hermann Maxy's first solo exhibition took place in 1918, in Iași. The year 1920 found him in Bucharest, at the opening of a new solo exhibition. The '20s represented a fertile period in the artist's creation, often sliding from an integralist style towards the international avant-garde. During this period, Maxy collaborated with the most important local publications. His name is undeniably linked to the beginnings of Cubism in Romania, but his debut will catch him attracted by the realism practiced by his masters, Camil Ressu and Iosif Iser. During the First World War, Maxy is enlisted in the army, hence he will use part of his detachment time to draw and paint, inspired by the villages he passes through. He will arrive in Bucharest at the recommendation of Nicolae Tonitza, following the delegations made in Iași. Once arrived in Bucharest, he enters the circle of Alexandru Bogdan Pitești. He thus comes to create, like many other painters before him, in the famous rural settlement of Vlaici. Most of the time, during this period, he exhibits with Ștefan Dimitrescu, Camil Ressu or Nicolae Dărăscu.
