The work represents the first scientific publication from the Principality of the Romanian Country publishing historical documents related to the country's past. Just as Mihail Kogălniceanu published such documents in a scientific form in Iași, in Bucharest Nicolae Bălcescu and the Transylvanian historian August Treboniu Laurian inaugurated in 1845 the series "Historical Magazine for Dacia". The first volume, printed in 1845, includes, besides the actual documents, two theoretical texts regarding the value of historical sources, signed by the two editors. The second volume, published in 1846, includes internal diplomatic documents and extracted references concerning Romanians from various foreign sources. The third volume, also printed in 1846, published the Chronicle of the Moldavian Country written by Ioan Neculce. The fourth volume, published in 1847, includes several local chronicles and documents from the Viennese archives. The fifth volume, the last in this series, was also published in 1847, and continued the publication of the documents from Volume IV. The copies retain the original covers from the time and were rebound in the second half of the 19th century in cardboard covers with leather spine, divided into six registers. On each title page, there is a stamped ex-libris of provenance.
