Gheorghe Șaru will study at the Academies of Fine Arts in Iasi, Bucharest and Perugia, Italy. He debuts in 1948 at the Annual State Exhibition and then, participates in some Venice Biennial editions. The influence of his master, Jean Al. Steriadi will be felt most in the artist's early years. This period is strongly related to folk figurative and social themes. His creation of the middle of the last century is deliberately imbued with a narrative character and abounds in representations of female faces. Gheorghe Șaru approaches a geometric manner, maintaining the natural shapes as we can see in the present work. His constructions are balanced, meticulously worked and thought out in detail. His unique style reveals an exceptional colourist which possesses the science of harmonious chromatic combinations. The artist evokes the materiality of the world he lives in, simplifies the shapes, lines, and creates real pictorial snapshots by which he captures common people in their everyday life. The poetic symbolism of rural life is illustrated by rustic landscapes, peasants groups or workers and rural portraits. Ethnographic details are often captured in the excessive ornamentation of the backgrounds and props of the characters (in this case, the meticulously crafted traditional clay pot with traditional details). Gheorghe Șaru's work will evolve from figurative painting, subjected to narrative character, to abstract painting. The journey in Mexico in 1964, will be decisive in changing the course of his plastic language. His preoccupation with cellular tissues and ancient Aztec art will be more evident from this point on in his creation. The signs of this evolution were presented much earlier, introduced briefly and much more cryptically, and the change itself will be complex. Created in 1967, the present work is subject to both figurative manners - in its approach, subject matter and manner of execution - and experimental tendencies, with ornamental motifs inspired by Aztec art. The creation of Șaru remains, regardless of the period in which it was created, profoundly related to painting and drawing, to which the artist attributes new dimensions and meanings.
