La 8 august 1945, se înfiinţa consorţiul TARS (Transporturi Aeriene Româno-Sovietice) deţinut de guvernul URSS şi cel al României, iar în 1954, acţiunile uniunii sovietice sunt achiziţionate de către statul român, iar numele companiei aeriene devine TAROM (Transporturi Aeriene Române). La începutul anilor '60, TAROM deja avea zboruri regulate către zeci de oraşe europene, iar în 1974, se organiza un zbor regulat la New York.
