Princess Ileana, the fifth child of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, studied art under the guidance of professors Ion Jalea and Jean Al. Steriadi. Her talent encouraged her to dedicate herself to drawing and engravement, and the few splendid medals and plates she engraved, including the present one, serve as testimonials. This one is dedicated to the sea, the Princess being also a Navy Officer, which was a premiere for Romania, as this profession was firstly destined to men. On the front side, the centre plan is dominated by a haloed feminine figure (the Holy Mother) supporting a sailboat. In oblique position, on the lower left corner, the caption "DEI MATER STELLA MARES ORA PRONOBIS" (Mother of God, star of the sea, pray for us), and in the upper right corner one can see the Princess's signature, as well as the year of execution of the plate, 1929. On the retro side, an ancient colonnade on the sea shore, bears the caption "HOPE FOR THE LIVING/ FLOWING WATER FOR THE THIRSTY/ REST FOR THE TIRED/ PEACE FOR THE UNSETTLED".
