Though initially in his creation, Stefan Dimitrescu positioned himself against so-called "forms without content" which he mainly found in "eternal" still lifes, the artist eventually adopted this style as his preferred form of demonstrating his creative potential. For Dimitrescu, the subject had to be marked by pathos, idea, and feeling. Particularly in his works where he describes interiors, the artist invites the viewer to penetrate his intimate space, filled with his personal belongings. Testifying to his mastery are compositions such as "Vegetables" from the National Art Museum in Cluj or "Fish" from the National Art Museum in Bucharest. While Andreescu and Luchian were rather driven towards a philosophical attitude, Dimitrescu paints robustly, in a traditional spirit, leveraging a type of materiality that incorporates the idea. Daffodils, iris, buttercups or chrysanthemums will flood his canvases and stratify in the opulence of the paste and the vigor of strokes. Ceramic vessels and the polychrome petals invite the viewer on a veritable floral journey. The white of the snow and tones of the ochre and orange of the nasturtiums turn the present work into a contemplation of nature. We also note the ceramic vessel, for which the painter chooses much darker tones; and the mug with brushes, positioned on the same table. The background typical of his work, described in shades of brown, enhances the stylistic value of the main element: the vase with flowers.
