Mircea Vulcănescu (1904-1952) was an economist, philologist, philosopher, publicist, sociologist, theologian and Ethics teacher, as well as an encyclopaedic spirit. He occupied important positions in administration. He was Sub-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Finance in the government of General Ion Antonescu, in the period 27 January 1941 - 23 August 1944. Mircea Vulcănescu was arrested for being part of the Antonescu government and for war crimes. In 1946 he was sentenced to eight years of hard prison labour. He was imprisoned in Aiud, along with most of the Romanian elite, where he died in 1952, due to the inhuman treatment he was subjected to.
