At the age of 21, young Vânătoru gave up his career as an architect to fully dedicate himself to painting. Between 1929 and 1934 the painter was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, having Nicolae Tonitza, Francisc Şirato or Gheorghe Petraşcu as professors, who decisively influenced his subsequent journey. Vânătoru's appearance in the interwar artistic environment was to be remarked from his very debut in a gallery, as he received a prize from the jury of the Official Salon in 1932, at his first participation, in the year when young Eugène Ionesco noted that Vânătoru "is a real and vigorous temperament, an atmospheric creator and modern in colour, a clear hope of Romanian painting".
