The missionary school in Vălenii de Munte was organized by Nicolae Iorga in 1922 and conceived as a training centre for Romanian teachers, regardless of their ethnic origin and the region in which they taught in the public primary schools. Queen Maria accepted Iorga's proposal to patronize the school, as a result of which the institution was named after the queen. The courses lasted for a year, while trips to visit historical monuments were also organized.
