129. At Harvest Time [a doua jumătate a anilor '40]
The artistic journey of the painter Alexandru Ciucurencu reveals a slight predilection for classical themes such as landscape, still life or nudes, which he manages to absorb into his canvas to saturation. The artist continues the realist traditions of Romanian painting, inspired by Ștefan Luchian, and later becoming a disciple of Camil Ressu. Painter Ressu would instruct him in the secrets of composition and guide him towards the Julian Academy. Through his work, the artist will outline his adherence to an exuberant and elastic chromatic universe, with the help of which he will convey the lyrical dimension specific to Romanian lands. About Alexandru Ciucurencu it can be said that he manages to build in color, being the discoverer of expansive chromatic alignments. Basing his artistic creed on duality, the restraints and violence of color coexist in his work, sliding towards total harmony. The rhythm of color is the axis mundi in Ciucurencu's work, aiming to transpose, with its help, the real world into an artistic ideal. Through his inner compositional dialogue, the painter comes to express himself most truthfully in front of the easel, which gives him the opportunity to convey elements of everyday life on his canvas. In Romanian art, Ciucurencu was an initiate and initiator, being troubled by the world beyond his easel. The painter believed that "art is a burning fire that must be continuously maintained at ever higher temperatures." In the 1950s, the painter dedicated a whole series to landscapes specific to the rural world, including works such as: "In the field", "Landscape with haystacks". In the present work, "Harvesting", Alexandru Ciucurencu takes one of the traditional occupations from the rural world and portrays it accurately, managing to capture the heat of summer. The mechanization of agriculture seems to be absent in the described setting, with traditional methods still dominating the expression of rural life. Thus, in this work we do not have central characters, they are, this time, the subject of the picture by exclusion. We can only assume that the characters are withdrawn from the path of the sun during the furnace month. The work "At Harvesting" impresses with the chromatic harmony it proposes, having an abundance of shades of yellow, but also darker shades that signal the belonging of life to color.
