The origin of the title Chiriacodromion is found in Greek: kiriakos-kiriaki = Sunday, Sunday, Sunday sermon or Cazania. The first initiative to print such a collection of sermons belonged to Varlaam, the Metropolitan of Moldova, materialized in 1643, in Iași, with the help of ruler Vasile Lupu; the book will remain in the consciousness of Romanians under the title of Varlaam's Cazania. If in the case of Cazania the content indicates 74 sermons, the Chiriacodromion of Balgrad includes a number of 81 sermons, being a volume in the in 4° format, with [2] leaves and another 415 numbered leaves, the print being made with black and red in the case of the title leaf, the rest of the text being rendered in black. The text on each leaf is framed in a linear box. The printer of the book was Mihai Iștvanovici. On the verso of the title leaf, the coat of arms of the Balgrad Metropolitanate was printed. The preface attests the edition of the book with the support of the Balgrad Metropolitanate and the Lordship of the Romanian Country, it is important to note that this book appeared at the expense of the ruler Constantin Brâncoveanu. The cultural patronage of the Voivode ("common good") is highlighted by the scholar printer thus in the preface of the book: "lo Constantin Brâncoveanul Basarab Voevod, who has shown himself (and always shows himself) illuminating the Orthodox faith, strengthening it with divine books, printing them in every way, who being the true patron of the holy Metropolis of Transylvania and all those who strive under His Highness's mercy, your saints did not pass your request, but according to the desire of your saints and the honorable council not happening at this time our Romanian nation here in Transylvania a master for the work of printing, His Highness had mercy for the love of the holy church to send me on the service of his saints and the holy council, what would be the lack of the holy church if possible to be satisfied...". The paper used to print this rather large book has an exceptionally varied provenance, several types of paper (paper mills) being identified through the watermarks, whether Italian, Austrian, French, German, possibly even Polish paper (the use of Transylvanian paper is not excluded). The print run does not seem to have exceeded 1000 copies, which anyway means a relatively large print run for the respective period. As a result of a move by the metropolitan assembly, the selling price of a copy of the book was set at 20 zlotys [florins], a relatively large amount for the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The volume is complete, having (3)+415 leaves. The binding is made of wooden boards covered in brown leather, decorated, on both covers, with a double border, from stylized vines, and in the inner field of both covers with small rosettes, ornamental frames mostly erased. The print, predominantly black, is very elegant, the pages being adorned with a large number of ornate initials. Also noteworthy is the engraving with the coat of arms of the Balgrad Metropolitanate and the engraving with the representation of the St. Emperors Constantine and Helena.
