oil on canvas, 84.5 x 100.5 cm, 84,5 × 100,5 cm, signed and dated bottom left, with black, "G. Petrașcu, (1)916"

Paying great attention to the landscape from the beginning, Petrașcu will create true eulogies in his approach to this genre. Highlighted in his work during his studies in Paris, when he painted in Montreuil, his early landscapes took on vesperal, sometimes even nocturnal, appearances, which later led him in symbolist directions. Back in the countryside, his landscapes will take on a romantic character, using notions such as chiaroscuro, vigorous contrasts and sunset effects. His brush will become energetic and passionate, while the light will be used as a means of expressing contrasts. Around 1916 we meet him near the Danube, as well as in Balchik and Turtucaia. The year 1916 was also the year of his participation in the Youth Art Exhibition, where he exhibited 21 paintings, representing seascapes, portraits and flowers. (G.M.)
