The period from 1903-1910, indicative of full artistic maturity, will also be one of the most fruitful times in Stefan Luchian's creation. He will constantly return to the heart of nature, from where he will extract his creative lifeblood. If until now he was more attracted to the city's energy, after his hospital discharge, his artistic pursuits will be mostly felt in the rural area, among Romanian villages. We will therefore notice real panoramas of Govora, Filipeștii-de-Pădure or Brebu. The epistles addressed to his friends describe his working trips and the joy of being in the heart of nature. The summers were spent in these rural settlements, which aroused his interest, thus contributing to his work's development. Starting from nature, he did not limit himself to a faithful, servile, and passive copy of what was visible, but sought to unravel the most characteristic aspects of reality which he organized into artistic images, imprinted by his own feelings. Concerned from an early age with the surrounding reality - which his work was to express through an artistic truth - Luchian took his cues from outside the academic school, choosing to observe the art of the great masters, from whom the artist would choose the motifs that would inspire him and which he would interpret in his harmonies. Among these, master Grigorescu found his place, from whom Luchian took the cues of a lively art, recalling in certain periods of his artistic creation the faces of peasant girls or ox carts. In the period 1905-1910, considered the pinnacle of his creation, Luchian will show a special interest towards the oppressed and overworked, creating a series of specific scenes where the subjects will be workers and villagers. In these years, besides his own appearance and that of his relatives, Luchian's portraiture will encompass a large number of humble people, peasants and peasant women, city workers, musicians and beggars.
