Nicolae Bălan was metropolitan of Transylvania between 1920 and 1955 He played an important role in supporting the national movement of Romanians in Transylvania and in achieving the Great Union. During the interwar period he became a fervent supporter of the Legionary Movement, an extreme right-wing, anti-Semitic, xenophobic and anti-democratic movement. The album was purchased by him during a trip to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. The page opposing the first page contains a handwritten memento, signed and dated by the Metropolitan. On the back of the album’s pages, there are plants picked during the journey, glued to decorate the pages with this small botanical collection. The album covers are made of walnut wood.
